Martina was born at the Daly River Catholic Mission. Her country is around Daly River in the Northern Territory of Australia. Her father was a traditional member of the Marrithiyel Tribe of Woodikapuldiya; in 1987 he was awarded NT Aboriginal of the year. Martina's mother is from a neighbouring tribe at Port Keats. 

She was raised and educated at the Daly River Mission and there she was taught her art by Miriam Rose Ungunmerr. Her art, depicting the Dreaming and interaction with the plants and animals of the area, is inspired by her country and the traditional stories of her clan.
